Politicization of Gender and Sexuality in Russia
In this project I study how and where gender and sexuality politicize in Contemporary Russia. My research is conducted mainly in St. Petersburg and Moscow among groups of feminist and LGBT activists. The research material is produced with participatory observation, interviews as well as netnography. I am particularly interested in the feminist spaces that activists create in a society not very friendly to activism of any kind. I also ask, what has politicized my informants and how is activism lived through and visible in their everyday lives. By doing group interviews and using the method of memory work with activists of today and activist veterans from the 1980’s and 1990’s I also look into how feminist activism and its tradition live or break in Russia.
